The #1 rug regret from every design forum, every Reddit thread, and every friend I've helped shop: the rug is too small.

This is especially painful in bedrooms, because the bed is huge and the rug needs to work with it, not against it. Get this wrong and your beautiful $600 rug looks like a bathmat. Get it right and even a $200 rug looks intentional and expensive.

Here's the placement math for every standard bed size, plus the three placement styles that actually work.

The three bedroom rug placement styles

Before you pick a size, pick a style. There are really only three that look good:

Style 1: Full rug under bed (most common)

The rug extends 2–3 feet on either side of the bed and 2–3 feet past the foot. Your bare feet land on rug when you get out of bed. Feels luxurious, looks intentional.

Best when: You have a big room, want maximum coziness, and don't mind buying a large rug.

Style 2: Rug perpendicular under lower two-thirds of bed

The rug tucks under the bottom two-thirds of the bed and extends past the foot. Nightstands sit on the bare floor.

Best when: You want the rug's pattern visible (not hidden under the bed) and you're on a tighter budget. Uses a smaller rug for the same visual effect.

Style 3: Two smaller runners on either side

A 2×6 or 2×8 runner on each side of the bed. Nothing under the bed itself.

Best when: You have gorgeous floors you don't want to cover, or you're in a rental and don't want to invest in a large area rug.

Do NOT do the tiny 3×5 or 4×6 rug centered at the foot of the bed. It looks like an afterthought every time.

The exact sizes for each bed

For a Full/Double bed (54" × 75")

  • Style 1 (full under bed): 8×10 minimum
  • Style 2 (perpendicular): 6×9
  • Style 3 (runners): two 2×6 runners

For a Queen bed (60" × 80")

  • Style 1 (full under bed): 9×12 recommended (8×10 acceptable)
  • Style 2 (perpendicular): 8×10
  • Style 3 (runners): two 2×8 runners

For a King bed (76" × 80")

  • Style 1 (full under bed): 10×14 recommended (9×12 acceptable)
  • Style 2 (perpendicular): 9×12
  • Style 3 (runners): two 2×8 or 3×8 runners

For a California King (72" × 84")

  • Style 1 (full under bed): 10×14 recommended (9×12 acceptable)
  • Style 2 (perpendicular): 9×12
  • Style 3 (runners): two 2×8 runners

The measurement to write down

Before you buy anything, measure your bedroom floor space not occupied by furniture. Specifically:

  1. Measure the distance from the foot of the bed to the wall (or dresser).
  2. Measure the distance from each side of the bed to the wall (or nightstand).

For Style 1 rugs, subtract 6 inches from each of these to leave breathing room. That's your rug's maximum comfortable footprint.

Best pattern colors for bedrooms

Bedrooms are different from living rooms because they're where you close your eyes. High-contrast patterns and stimulating colors work against sleep.

What works:

  • Muted washed vintage prints (sage, blush, cream, terracotta)
  • Warm neutrals with subtle texture
  • Cream with a barely-visible pattern
  • Faded traditional patterns in low-contrast palettes

What doesn't:

  • Sharp geometric prints
  • High-contrast black and white
  • Bold jewel tones (unless the rest of your room is very muted)

Bedroom rug material recommendations

Unlike a living room where practicality trumps luxury, bedrooms are one of the few places where wool is worth it. You're not eating on it, you're not walking on it in shoes, and you're standing on it barefoot every morning.

If wool is out of budget, look for:

  • Wool-blend rugs (30%+ wool is enough to feel the difference)
  • New Zealand or Turkish wool imports
  • Hand-loomed viscose blends

Avoid pure polyester for bedrooms — it feels plasticky on bare feet.
